Traditional Organ Meats and the Impact on Mental Health

Posted by Andie Dill

Organ meats. Have you tried them? Maybe just reading the title makes you squirm. Does anybody eat organ meats anymore? Who would like that?! Yuck! Those were some of my first expressions when I first began learning why organ meats are so incredibly beneficial to the diet. Growing up, my grandma used to always share stories of how her favorite dishes to cook for her and my grandpa were liver, tongue, and other various organs of an animal. My younger sister and I would squirm and stick out our tongues with how gross that sounded, but little did we know just how nutritious grandma’s meals were! To this day, my grandma still loves to “snack” on chicken livers, and gets excited about organ meat stew. However, you hear people eating organ meats less and less. What was once considered a traditional sacred food is now hardly spoken of. Well, my goal today is to turn that boat back around and get you excited about why organ meats are such a necessary component to your diet, and specifically the impact and benefit they have on mental health.

Posted by Andie Dill

In this post, I want to look at three ways or suggestions to show yourself a little love through a practice called self-compassion. This can take as little as a few minutes a day to do. Dairy-free Avocado Pistachio Pudding with Organic Coconut

Posted by Kayla Grossmann

Confession: I love pudding. Smooth, melt-in-your mouth swirls of it, topped with angelic wisps of whipped cream and garnished with delicate slivered nuts...sigh.  Layer it into a darling parfait dish or bake it in a ramekin and I find the stuff to be completely irresistible. While I enjoy most flavors, I have always been particularly fond of pistachio pudding, with its sophisticated taste and charming pale green color. One thing is for sure however...a dessert this good shouldn’t come from a box mix, nor should it be something that is sacrificed for those needing to avoid dairy. So, here is a cunning no-cook, dairy-free version that uses the natural coloring of an avocado, the robust sweetness of a banana and the creamy texture of coconut milk to create an easily-digested, satisfying mousse-like treat in minutes.

Nourishing Treats...For Pets!

Posted by Andie Dill

Last week marked one year since I adopted my sweet, brown, curly-haired Chesapeake Bay Retriever into our home and family. We have always enjoyed the breed and their fun-loving demeanor, as well as their fervent passion for the water, even in the frigid cold! Our last Chessie, Rocky, just passed away, after living 13 wonderful years experiencing outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, kayaking, and even surfing. Yes, we taught our dog to surf the waves to shore! This time around, with busy lives and hectic schedules, I decided to try something new – doggie adoption, in hopes of bypassing that time-consuming puppy stage. I looked into Chesapeake Bay Retriever rescues and breeders all around, when finally I found my Taylor! She came to me as a four-year-old mama of two litters, and I thought life would be smooth sailing from there. Boy, was I wrong! Due to the facts that Taylor was locked up in her crate (barely big enough to fit her body) for nearly all hours of the day and night, had to compete with nearly two dozen other dogs for attention, and never really got outdoors for anything other than to get a drink of water and to relieve herself, she was anything but the Chessie breed I had known with Rocky.

Hold Your Breath! Examining the Quality of Air Inside Our Homes…

Posted by Andie Dill

It is no surprise that our world is full of contaminants and pollutants. Everywhere you turn it seems there are signs, notices or just the ill effects of poor air quality. The sad reality is that these pollutants continue to rise and there does not seem to be a whole lot of action to stop it. One of the biggest things that has happened in my hometown within the last couple years is that the city has started irrigating all the land with recycled water. It smells awful, and the signs that read “DO NOT DRINK” give a clue that that water is anything but good for you. Unfortunately, that water is off-gassing harmful chemicals into the air, which go straight into our lungs.

DIY Nourishing Geranium Hand Cream

Posted by Andie Dill

Have you ever looked at the back of one of your hand lotions? Were you aware that there is an ingredients list, just like there is an ingredients list for food? The skin is the largest organ of the body, and just like you have to watch what you put in your body, it is just as important to watch what you put on your body. It can even be argued that it is more important to watch what you put on your skin than in your body! That is because anything put on the skin bypasses the digestive system and goes directly into your bloodstream. (1), (2)

The Benefits of Supplementing with Milk Thistle

Posted by Andie Dill

What do you first think of when you hear “Milk Thistle?” If you are like me when I first heard about milk thistle, I pictured a milky, thorny, plant. Little did I know! I laugh to this day because when I recommend milk thistle to others now, I often get that same perplexed look, and every once in a while somebody exclaims, “I am allergic to dairy!” Well, turns out milk thistle is actually a weed, a ragweed to be exact, and though it can grow in almost any warm climate around the world, milk thistle is found in abundance in my home state of California!
