Health Benefits of Turmeric*

by Kathy LeMoine

Turmeric is a bright yellow plant in the ginger family (used in curry and mustard) that has been an important remedy in Eastern cultures. The root of the Turmeric plant has long been used for medicinal purposes in Asia to treat gastrointestinal upsets, arthritis pain, and fatigue. In traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been used as a tonic for the digestive system and the liver. It is used to dispel worms, strengthen the body, dissolve gallstones, assist in regulating menstruation and ease arthritis symptoms. Hindu texts describe turmeric as an aromatic, stimulant, and carminative (helps expel gas from the intestines and treats colic). Valued for its medicinal properties, Turmeric is becoming well known in the West as well.

Curcuminoids - Powerful Antioxidants

The active compounds in turmeric known as curcuminoids are potent phytonutrients that contain powerful antioxidant properties, showing activity as much as 300 times greater than that of vitamin E. The main curcuminoid, Curcumin helps to counteract the damaging effects of free radicals in the body, exerting extraordinary liver protection and rejuvenation properties.

Benefits of Curcumin:

  • Helps stimulate the flow of bile and aids in fat digestion.
  • Its powerful ability to stimulate bile production assists the liver in detoxification
  • Known to help with psoriasis and other skin conditions
  • Promotes circulation
  • Helps purge wastes from the blood
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Clinical trials have shown curcumin to relieve arthritis pain and stiffness
  • Highly protective against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's
  • Powerful anti-tumor and cancer preventative properties

Turmeric Uses: a Supplement and a Spice to Add to Your Food

Turmeric can be taken daily in capsule form or can be enjoyed as an everyday spice you add to your food. Try adding it your oatmeal, grains and beans, or vegetable dishes. Whichever way turmeric is consumed, it assists with health issues related to inflammation, digestion, and skin conditions.

Critical, however, to remember is that turmeric’s magical properties are only liberated in a matrix of oil, so it is imperative that it first be mixed with olive, sesame – or our favorite – organic coconut oil before being taken. It does not have to be sautéed or cooked, but merely blended.

A recent interview with Dr. Keith Scott, a physician in Cape Town, South Africa, has brought to light much cutting-edge information about the potent healing power of spices, particularly rich in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory factors, and far exceeding that of almost all other natural sources. While the interview, as well as his own books on the subject, contain a wealth of valuable information, the pearl of particular value in light of our mention here of the unique powers of turmeric is that Dr. Scott has discovered that there is, between many of the spices, a dramatically increased synergistic effect when taken in tandem, and that the taking of turmeric in combination with black pepper (raw and organic) increases the potency of anti-inflammatory effect of turmeric by 1000% -- a tenfold increase in healing power. Thank you, Dr. Scott!
