High protein smoothie recipes: feel vibrant & energetic!

by Kathy LeMoine

Last year, we published our favorite recipe for a nutritious smoothie. We continue to experiment with taste, satiety, digestion, energy level, etc.

Healthy Fats and Protein: the essential nutrients!

If you are looking to feel well-nourished, full of energy and ready to take on the day, make sure that both fat and protein are part of your smoothie. Protein is your body's metabolism controller, helping you to stabilize appetite and hunger. Both fat and protein are critical for optimal brain function.

Best Protein Source

One of the best sources of protein is an egg from a pastured hen that has been out in the sun eating bugs and worms all day! These eggs are a rich source of choline, a B vitamin that supports optimal brain function.

Best Fat Source

We prefer to add coconut oil to our smoothies, as coconut oil produces energy without adding fat to our middles. Coconut oil is made up of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs). MCFAs are digested and utilized differently than many other fatty acids. They are sent directly to our liver where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as body fat.

Practically speaking, the egg yolk works as an emulsifier for the coconut oil, making for a "smoothly-blended" smoothie. No lumps of coconut oil when you combine these before adding cold fruit, cream, etc.!

This mixed berry smoothie recipe tastes great and holds us for several hours:

2 cups of  fresh or thawed organic berries (rasberries, blackberries, strawberries makes a great combination)

2 TBS raw yogurt, cream or kefir from grassfed cows (optional)

2 raw egg yolks from free-range hens

2-3 TBS coconut oil

1 tsp flaxseed oil

2 TBS Capra Mineral Whey

1 tsp spirulina

2 tsp greens powder

2 TBS pure whey protein powder

1/2 cup purified water

-Blend egg yolks and coconut oil and flaxseed oil together in blender.

-Add fresh or thawed organic berries and optional cream, yogurt or kefir and blend well.

-Add capra mineral whey, spirulina, greens powder, pure whey protein powder and pure water.

Blend and enjoy! Makes 2 servings.
