High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil - A Thing of the Past?

As the old English proverb (credited to Chaucer, circa 1374) goes..."All good things must come to an end". This is the unfortunate truth when it comes to our all natural, high vitamin Quantum Cod Liver Oil from Premier Research Labs. This has been a product many of us have relied on heavily over the years, confident in knowing that we were getting the best of the best high vicodtamin cod liver oil at a great price. However, it is no longer being manufactured by Premier Research Labs and therefore discontinued. The supply of this precious oil has now been depleted and is no longer being produced the same way anywhere. Only a small amount of the capsule form remains in our warehouse. We have searched the world far and wide for over two years and have come away satisfied in our knowledge that this particular oil is no longer available. Cod liver oil producers (the large mills in Norway and Iceland) have converted all of their operations to produce cod liver oil that has been heavily processed to the point that it now reflects an industrially produced substance, replete with synthetic vitamins and not nearly nutrient-dense enough to satisfy us. Given these realities, here's our advice:

What We Suggest You Avoid

Industrially processed cod liver oil has been bleached, deodorized and heated through one of several means thus stripping it of its natural properties and then reconstructed, standardized and artificially fortified with the addition of various synthetic vitamins and other supplements. These types of oils are available under many brand names from a variety of sources. From our perspective, whatever the brand name, they are all in the same category and not recommended.

What We Strongly Recommend

1. Consume Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil produced from Green Pasture. We will continue to offer and recommend the wide variety of flavors in both liquid and capsules. We are also considering the introduction of a smaller 4 ounce bottle, making this highly concentrated cod liver oil available at a lower price point for more people. As little as 1/4 ounce of the Green Pasture fermented cod liver oil packs a potent punch. Recognizing that some of us are affected by taste, feel, and the higher price of the fermented cod liver oil, we offer you the following alternative.

2. Choose our new Super Nutrient Trio. Consisting of our Radiant Life Desiccated Beef Liver, Radiant Life Krill Oil and an all natural, live source Vitamin D3 serum, our just introduced Super Nutrient Trio is an outstanding and synergistic combination of our most essential nutrients. Our beef liver, the most nutrient dense food is available in both powder and capsule form, is a powerhouse in terms of Vitamin A, all of the B vitamins and a great source of essential minerals. Likewise our sustainably sourced krill oil provides an unmatched source of EPA and DHA in phospholipid form coupled with a powerful antioxidant known as astaxanthin. The third leg of this Trio consists of the most concentrated, live source of Vitamin D3 with 2000 IU is a single drop! Overall, our Radiant Life Super Nutrient Trio provides the perfect, all natural combination of wholesome nutrients available on the planet.

How does the Blue Ice compare to the Quantum?
Posted @ Wednesday, April 27, 2011 6:15 PM by Gregory Oehley
FCLO is now the only cod liver oil I would use. The smaller size sounds more do-able pricewise. :)

The Blue Ice brand is a fermented cod liver oil. It is produced without heat or any other form of harsh industrial processing. The fermentation process retains the vital nutrients within the oil while helping to facilitate with digestion and assimilation. This is available in many flavors and as capsules.

The Quantum brand is no longer being produced. It was unfermented and the last of the minimally processed cod liver oils (i.e. did not go through molecular distillation) which kept the natural vitamin levels high without the need to introduce synthetic vitamins.

I hope this answers your question. Also, you may want to refer to our Product Description and FAQ tab within our website which is available for most products.

Thanks very much for the inquiry.

I am very sad to see the quantum cod liver oil go. Maybe I might try the fermented cod liver oil again, but last time I tried it seemed to stimulate a flare up in yeast overgrowth symptoms. Have you heard of North american Herb and Spices Polar power apparently they make it from the salmon head. Here is a link. Thank you for your time.

Thank you Melinda. Radiant Life will be announcing a salmon oil product very soon as well. In the meantime, you may want to consider a set of brand new, all natural cod liver oil flavors. They have all been "kid tested" to be pleasant tasting and easy to digest. Hi,

I had been using the fermented cod liver oil/butter oil blend liquid for some time. I recently decided to try the capsules for convenience and had a flare up in anxiety which I could not understand. I checked the label and noticed that the ingredients contains bee pollen which I had not noticed before and wonder if this is a new addition. I stopped taking the product and the anxiety symptoms gradually went away only to return when I started taking the new gel forumulation. I don't know what they put in this now but I remember that it used to turn to liquid in warm weather and now this is a semi-solid gel. In any case I find that I can't take this supplement anymore which is a shame as I used to rely on it to clear colds and flu quickly in the past.

Hello Weyinmi,

The capsules do not contain bee pollen but do contain unbleached beeswax used as a thickener. The gel contains silica which keeps it in gelatinous form even in the warm weather.

Since both of these are creating issues for you, alternatively you may want to consider simply plain butter oil
(Item #4123, http://www.radiantlifecatalog.com/product/BUTTER-OIL-HIGH-VITAMIN/healthy-fats-oils)
and combine it with plain fermented cod liver oil
(Item #4130,http://www.radiantlifecatalog.com/product/fermented_cod_liver_oil/healthy-fats-oils)

I hope this helps!

Greetings!

My five month old boy has been growing healthy and strong since 6 weeks old on your baby formula. Words cannot express my gratitude for your website. Can you advise on what product to use in place of the discontinued cod liver oil for the baby formula? Many thanks, Cristy

Hello Cristy,

Glad to hear that you son is doing so well on the homemade baby formula!

With respect to your question on the cod liver oil, we consulted with Sally Fallon on this topic and came to the agreement that 1/2 teaspoon of the fermented flavor & antioxidant free liquid (Item #4130) is the best replacement.

Thanks for the question!

Norm--Greetings!

While placing my order today, I realized I have two additional questions with regards to baby formula and first foods.

1) Can I use your new "Green Pastures Butter Oil/Fermented Cod Liver Oil Blend" in place of your Green Pastures High Vitamin Butter Oil and discontinued Cod Liver Oil?

2) Can I introduce your new "Radiant Life Desiccated Liver Powder" into the diet of my 5 month old?

Many thanks, again!
Cristy

Hello Cristy,

In answer to your questions:

1)Yes, as butter oil in an optional ingredient within the formula, Item #4124 (Butter Oil/Cod Liver Oil Blend) would be a fine substitute.

2)On page 603 of Nourishing Traditions, a meat-based formula based on liver is discussed as an option. Desiccated Liver, along with egg yolk and cod liver oil, are whole foods and appropriate for infants between 4 and 6 months. Many studies confirm the practices of traditional peoples who gave liver as the first weaning food as reported on pages 57-59 of the Healthy Baby Issue (Item #1161) of the Wise Traditions Journal. Be sure to include coconut oil to supply the required saturated fats.

Great questions!

Hello, I need to consume 20,000 IU of vitamin A daily. How much should I take of the Blue Ice cod liver oil to cover that?
Posted @ Thursday, May 12, 2011 2:29 PM by Heather
Hello Heather,

For that daily amount of Vitamin A, you would need approximately 2 teaspoons. This is an approximation since the test results for fermented cod liver oil can vary based on many factors. Please see our recent blog post titled: </>Fermented Cod Liver Oil: What's All the Fuss about Vitamins?

You may also want to consider our Desiccated Liver (Item #s 4702, 4703)as a great source of Vitamin A among lots of other nutrients.

Wishing you Radiant wellness!

Hi,

Were natural vitamins added to the Quantum Cod Liver Oil or were the vitamins in this clo naturally occurring with nothing added after it was minimally processed? Also, why wasn't this clo considered raw since it has only been heated to 98 degrees fahrenheit during the processing?

Thank you!
Posted @ Thursday, June 09, 2011 8:45 AM by Erica
Hi Erica,

According to the manufacturer, the Quantum Cod Liver Oil contained only naturally occurring vitamins. We never considered it a raw food because it was never conveyed to us as being raw. Where did you read that it was never heated beyond 98 degrees
Fahrenheit?

Thank you!

Hi Norman,

Thank you very much for your reply! I have contacted the manufacturer by e-mail a couple of months ago regarding the temperature at which they heat the cod liver oil. Here's what they had to say:

"Erica,

I apologize for the delay in this response. We process our Cod Liver Oil at 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kind regards,

Premier Research Labs"

I buy Premier CLO as Quantum Nutrional Labs CLO now at my local HFS. Same thing, just different brand name. Same address of the company.
Posted @ Wednesday, August 10, 2011 10:37 AM by Hélène
Hello Hélène,

Have you checked with your HFS about the product's long term availability? It's likely that they will be out of stock very soon and will no longer be able to get it.

I just came across this blog thread; it is old, so maybe things have changed. I did not do well with the fermented CLO from Green Pastures, and now I take Sonne's "Old Fashioned" CLO. Here is what they say about its manufacture--this seems like it's anOK product...? Anyway, so far it's worked well for me, and I've been taking it for over a year. I test in the high-normal range for Vitamin D in 2 blood tests I've had.

Sonne's Old Fashioned Cod Liver Oil No 5 Description
Not De-Stearinated (Fat Not Removed)
Natural Source of Vitamin A& D
Natural Source of the Long Chain Fatty Acids (EPA)
Our unrefined Cod Liver Oil is a rich source of natural vitamin A, vitamin D, and the essential fatty acids: linoleic, linolenic, arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids. These nutrients are critical for normal metabolism, brain and nerve function, and protecting and building the immune system. EPA and DHA are long-chain, omega-3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish and marine mammals that support a healthy cardiovascular system. Nutritionists recommend supplementing the diet with a small amount of cod liver oil, especially during the winter months, to ensure adequate dietary intake of vitamins A and D.*

Our Cod Liver Oil uses natural Norwegian cod liver oil derived from fish caught in open waters in the North Atlantic Ocean – away from sites of industrial pollution. In order to ensure that our Cod Liver Oil is safe for consumption, we routinely use an independent laboratory to test for heavy metals and environmental contaminants (such as organochlorides). Our oil is processed without the use of chemicals or heat. We purposely leave it unrefined, so it retains the natural balance of vitamins and fatty acids. We are NOT interested in refining out its natural "fishy" taste and smell at the expense of the natural nutritional content and balance.
